Enjoying the Special Events of Summer

Do you avoid birthday parties, weddings, holidays, and family gatherings because of the many different choices of cookies and cakes offered at these events? Special occasions can be challenging, especially when they seem to be completely centered on food. Don’t let diabetes keep you away from celebrations and gatherings with friends and family. You don't have to give up parties or birthday cake because of diabetes. But you need to plan for those occasional treats.

There are a few simple tips to follow for making it through, and enjoying, special occasions. Think about offering to bring a dish to pass. That way you’ll be assured of at least one healthy snack or dish you can enjoy. If you decide to bring your own food, pack wisely. Make sure you do bring your diabetes supplies with you, including your meter and testing supplies, and your medication. If you’re going to an event and you’re unsure as to when or if food will be served, stash some snacks in your bag, pocket, or car to have on hand. Eating at the same time every day can help you maintain steady blood sugar levels, especially if you take diabetes medications or insulin shots. If you're eating out with others, schedule the gathering at your usual mealtime. If you can't avoid eating later than usual, snack on a fruit or starch serving from the upcoming meal at your usual mealtime.

Either way, choosing smaller portions and careful choices can help you make special occasion meals part of your overall plan for diabetes nutrition. Whether you're eating at home or eating out, remember the principles of diabetes nutrition. Eat a variety of healthy foods, limit the amount of fat and salt in your diet, and keep portion sizes in check. Holidays, family gatherings, and other special occasions are about fun and friends, not the food. Make sure you enjoy the day. Create some new holiday traditions, play party games with the kids, and just enjoy the company. Plan ahead, choose wisely, and you'll find foods that fit into your meal plan.

Knowing about the risk factors and symptoms of type 2 diabetes is important. Take an online risk assessment test NOW to find out your risk. Send your family, friends, and co-workers here to get an assessment. Who knows, one of them could have diabetes and not even know. But remember, this test is NOT diagnostic and is only a measure of relative risk. Only your doctor can diagnose you with diabetes.
